A Brief History:
Blue Hills Tae Kwon Do began in May 1997 under the instruction of Ryan Avery and Eric Swan, both Black Belts of 4th dan Master Instructor Duane Most*, and has made its home for the past twenty years at Olympic Fitness Center, 800 Hammond Avenue, Rice Lake, WI. Blue Hills TKD is currently owned and operated by Eric Swan, who is now a 5th dan Master Instructor in Tae Kwon Do, a 1st dan Black Belt in Hapkido, and a 1st dan Black Belt in Kumdo. Master Swan is assisted by Wesley Peck, who was recently promoted to 1st Dan Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do.
Blue Hills TKD accepts students as young as five years old, and teaches students how to stay out of harm’s way by avoiding physical altercations whenever possible. For those times when a physical response is the only alternative to stay safe, students are taught kicking and striking combinations (Tae Kwon Do), joint lock and throws (Hapkido), and submission grappling techniques. Master Swan has a law enforcement background that stretches back 35+ years, and he teaches his martial arts students the same use-of-force decision-making skills that he teaches his fellow police officers. Students are taught how to explain their decisions and actions in court-defensible legal terms, should the need arise.
Black Belts and Master Instructors of Blue Hills TKD continue their training under the guidance of 8th dan Grandmaster Jim Grimestad of Fargo, ND. Their training includes seminars, summer camps, and personal instruction by Grandmaster Grimestad.
*Master Duane Most was the last person to be personally instructed from new student to Black Belt by Great Grandmaster Moo Yong Yun. Great Grandmaster Yun is now a 10th dan (highest attainable ranking) and head of the Chang Moo Kwon (our style of Tae Kwon Do). He is a South Korean national war hero, and the former personal bodyguard of the South Korean President.
